Robotic - This type for in ground and above ground swimming pools work independently of the pool circulation system. They plug in to an outlet and a transformer reduces current to 24V. This type of pool cleaner is safe for pool operation and generally the best quality.

Pressure with booster pump - This type of swimming pool cleaner is the best for reliable constant working pressure and for pools that get leaves and larger debris. The swimming pool plumbing has to have a dedicated line (pressure - after the pump) to connect the booster pump to. The booster pump accelerates the water flow after the main circulating pump and delivers it to a wall outlet inside the pool where the cleaner connects to.

Pressure without booster pump - This pool cleaner is the most energy efficient of all. It works with the pressure from the main circulation pump. This type also has to have a dedicated line after the main pump or filter going to the wall fitting where the pool cleaner connects.

Suction - The suction in ground pool cleaner and above ground pool cleaner is also energy efficient. It works off the main circulation pump. It is powered by the suction and is connected inline before the main pump. This pool cleaner attaches to a dedicated suction line in your pool wall or the pool skimmer on older pools.
